US Secretary of Defence James Mattis brushed off reports that the US could deploy a Patriot missile system to Eastern Europe during a joint press conference with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite in Vilnius, Wednesday.

When asked whether the rumours that a US long-range Patriot missile system would be deployed to the Lithuania were true, President Grybauskaite stated that Lithuania needed “all necessary means for defence and for deterrence." She added that "that's what we will decide together with the Americans: how much and what we would like to have on our territory."

Mattis, in turn, said that “The systems that we bring are those that we determine necessary. I think any build-up of Russian combat power in an area where they know - and we all know - they are not threatened by anything that we are doing in Lithuania or elsewhere in the democratic countries… any kind of build-up like that is simply destabilising."
