The Swiss A13 motorway must be one of the most attractive motorways in Europe although it is not really a motorway by the time it gets this far as it some places it is one lane only although the route is charged. Splügen is one of the last villages in the valley before one comes to the San Bernadino tunnel - or if it is summer and one is feeling brave, then the San Bernadino Pass.

Splügen is a historic village and the houses of the merchants who traded along the route can be seen in the village. In the summer one can also visit historic bridges to see how people once travelled across the Alps.

Not far from the village is the source of the Rhine.

In 1995, the Swiss Heritage Society bestowed the Wakker Prize to Splügen. The prize description notes that Splügen had reached a notable compromise between preservation and tourism. The old town was strictly protected to maintain the original appearance, while rational zone planning allowed development to occur outside the old village.
