If you're thinking of traveling through Europe, put Switzerland on the agenda if you are an outdoor enthusiast. If you love bicycles then this may be one of the best places to visit. The country has a network of 8,300 km (5,157 miles) of bicycle paths on 9 national and 55 regional routes.
The 5 Best Places for Cycling in Switzerland:
Rhone Route - this is one the most popular routes because it winds its way along the shore of lake Geveva. You start in Geneva and go along a combination of bicycle paths and dedicated lanes on the roads as you cycle along the north shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman). You pass through a number of towns like Lausanne and Vevey where you can see the Olympic Museum. There are numerous vineyards along the way where the trail leads you into Montreux.
Montreux is close to the famous Castle de Chillon, the number one historical attraction in Switzerland. The bicycle path continues along the banks of the Rhone River passing the International Cycling Association velodrome and wine center of Sion before ending in Andermatt. This route covers a few minor hills along the lake and can be handled by anyone used to riding a bicycle as long as you feel up to it. Some of the Hotels Montreux provides are on the lake shore with great views of the Alps.
Rhine Route -- If you want to continue on, this route starts near Andermatt and heads towards the Austrian border before heading north to the Bodensee (Lake Constance) and Basel. This cycling route is over gently rolling terrain and should not be too difficult.
Lakes Route -- This is a somewhat more difficult route and would be great if you are looking for a challenge. Starting in Montreux there is a very steep climb at first taking you into the cheese making town of Guyere. The route continues through the mountain side eventually passing through Lucerne.
Mittelland Route - Starting on the shores of Lake Geneva, this route heads across northern Switzerland to Lake Neuchatel where you will find the watch making town of Biel. You then head eastward into the Zurich area and end up at Lake Constance. This route starts off with a few hills but most of the route is fairly easy to cycle through as the hills are not too difficult to manage.
Bodensee Route -- This route is on Lake Constance and offers easy cycling around the lake. The cool part of this path is that you will be visiting three countries along the way, Switzerland, Austria and Germany.
The time of year you decide to take this trip can add to the experience as the heat can be a factor in the middle of summer, so you might want to skip July and August. Good times to plan for this would be May, June and September which seem to be the best time to avoid the head and crowds. If you ask around you'll probably find most people plan for somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks for one of these scenic Swiss bicycle tours.
For accommodations, a quaint place to stay would be in one of the Hotels Vevey has in town. Vevey is famous for its food and is worth spending at least one day there.
