A famous line by Ishikawa Goemon: "Is it a superb view? Nanzenji Temple, located in the eastern part of Kyoto, is the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, Nanzenji School, and is home to Sanmon (Sanmon), which was the setting for the Kabuki drama "Sanmon," as well as a brick waterway and a Zen garden. It is one of the most prestigious temples in Kyoto. The temple was founded in 1291, about 710 years ago, in the year of Sho'o 4 (1291). It was originally a detached palace built in 1264 and renamed as a Zen temple after the Emperor Kameyama became the Emperor of Japan.

In the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the temple was listed as one of the "Gozan no ue". The Gozan is one of the top five Zen temples in Kyoto. Nanzenji temple is one of the top five Zen temples in Kyoto. The original building was destroyed by fire in the Muromachi period and three other fires, and the current structure was rebuilt in the early Edo period or later.

In the Kabuki play "Rōmon Gozangiri", Ishikawa Goemon is famous for looking at the view from the San-mon gate and saying "Is it a superb view?
The best places to take photos are in the center of the San-mon gate where you can take a picture of the wide open view, and in the corner where you can take a picture of the building.

In the hall, there are three statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Monju Bosatsu and Fugen Bosatsu, and on the ceiling is a painting of Ban Ryu by Imao Keinen, a painter who was active from the Meiji to Taisho era.

Walking up the stairs with the Waterway Pavilion in the background, you will arrive at Nanzenin, known for its beautiful pond stroll garden. This is the remains of a detached palace donated by the ordained emperor Kameyama, and is also the birthplace of Nanzenji Temple.
The garden, which still retains the remnants of its past, is a typical pond strolling garden from the end of the Kamakura period, surrounded by deep woods, creating a mysterious atmosphere. The garden is said to have been created by the Emperor Kameyama himself, and is one of the three most scenic and historic gardens in Kyoto.
